My story is simple.

My dad, Samuel Ungerleider, Jr., was a Brown alum of 1939, all-American student, scholar athlete, and Olympic hopeful in swimming. He loved Brown and wore its colors with pride. He took us to lots of events in Providence to experience the Brown University culture. Sadly, he died very young in 1972. We did not know each other very well. Perhaps one memory is that he always talked about the great days at Brown and meeting terrific people there and the quality of education.

The other memory I have, which is quite vivid, is that dad loved the Passover Seder. He was not a religious Jew, but a cultural one and one that loved Israel. He would preside over the table and spring ritual of Seder and reading the Haggadah (translated means “to tell the story”).

He would sit at the head of the table as the master of the home and ask us to read and encourage us to drink wine—mandatory Jewish ritual that you drink at least four cups at Seder. (My younger sister actually spent one Seder on the floor as a result of this ritual.) My first Seder was with my late grandfather; I was six, and I was very nervous. It is in the tradition of Passover that the youngest at the table read or even “sing” the four questions . . . and I was the chosen youth.

I sat with my parents for weeks studying and practicing the four questions on a little stool in the kitchen. I wanted to be perfect to impress my grandfather. I remember the night that I sang and everyone was so kind and supportive and told me I was a star. (I’m not sure if I did well . . . but some at the table seemed impressed.) My father got up from his seat and gave me a kiss and said, “Mazel tov, you will make a good rabbi some day!”

I guess being a psychologist, writer, and Olympic sports medicine specialist is as close as I got to the rabbinic assembly. . . . But I will cherish that memory forever.

And now — please enjoy the collection of Haggadot which I have had for years; perhaps inspired by my bar mitzvah rabbi, Yosef Yerushalmi, a noted rabbi and later considered a preeminent scholar in early Hebrew literature.

— Dr. Steven Ungerleider, Eugene, Oregon,
