| Biographical Info: | Intellectual and forerunner of the Negritude tradition, Louis-Thomas Achille was a staunch Panafricanist, working towards racial equality in France, in Martinique, and in the United States. As a young student, Achille was educated first at the Lycee Shoelcher, then went on to pursue his studies at the Sorbonne. In 1931, Achille joined his cousins, the Nardal sisters, in the creation of Revue du Monde Noir, where he contributed three critical articles to the review. Achille’s deep interest in Black American musical and literary traditions resulted in a strong and lifelong friendship with Alain Locke. In 1965, Achille participated in the First Congress of Black Writers and Artists, sponsored by Presence Africaine. Over the course of his life, Achille taught both French and English at the university level in both France and the United States. Deeply inspired by spirituals, Achille founded the Centre de documentation sur la Musique Sacree Afro-Americaine shortly before his death. In addition to his role as an instructor and thinker, Achille also produced works as a painter and photographer. He also wrote the preface to the 1992 reprint of La Revue du Monde Noir. |
