| Biographical Info: | Prolific poet and longtime decolonial marxist advocate, Gilbert Gratiant remains one of the most prominent writers publishing in Martinican creole in history. In the early years of his career, Gratiant worked at the Lycée Schoelcher, where he taught students like Aimé Cesaire and Leopold Sedar Senghor. In 1928, Gratiant founded the periodical Lucioles. Gratiant contributed both poetry and critical essays to many decolonial periodicals including L’Etudiant Noir, Revue du Monde Noir, Présence Africaine, and Soutes. In 1935, Gratiant published the poem, “Joseph levé,” which made waves as one of the first poems published in Martinican creole to receive international acclaim. Gratiant’s poems were featured on the Paris Inter Radio, and serialized in various anthologies of Caribbean poetry over the years. Gratiant published seven volumes of poetry over the course of his life, and was awarded the Grand Prix des Antilles in 1965 for his body of work. Gilbert Gratiant’s brother, Georges Gratiant was similarly involved in avantgarde poetry movements and decolonial politics, as one of the founding contributors to the 1940s review Tropiques.
