| Biographical Info: | Prolific Guyanais poet and novelist, Rene Maran left an indelible mark on the history of Black francophone literature. In his early years, Maran served as a colonial officer in Central Africa, an experience which deeply shaped him and influenced many of his novels. Maran’s first novel, Batouala, won the Prix Goncourt in 1921, making Maran the first Black man to receive this honor. Over the course of his life, Maran published over twenty books, including novels Le Petit Roi de Chimerie and poetry collections La maison du bonheur, and Le visage calme. Maran’s work was featured in Damas’s 1947 Poetes d’expression francaise.
