| Biographical Info: | Léopold Sedar Senghor was the first President of Senegal, and as one of the founding fathers of Negritude. As a student in the métropole, Senghor worked alongside Aimé Césaire to produce L’Etudiant Noir. A devoted poet, writer, and anticolonial thinker, Senghor contributed both poetry and critical essays to various decolonial periodicals such as Cahiers du Sud, La Voix des Nègres, Black Orpheus, Lotus, Ethiopiques, and Présence Africaine. After World War II, Senghor transitioned from university teaching to politics. He was elected as a deputy to the National Assembly in 1946, and later served as the mayor of Thiès. Shortly after Senegal’s independence, Senghor was elected President, a role he occupied until his retirement in 1980. Over the course of his life, Senghor published an impressive body of work, including over ten volumes of poetry and an autobiography, Ce que je crois: négritude, francité, et civilisation de l’universel, which was published after his retirement from politics. His 1948 anthology, Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie nègre et malgache, was a major work that allowed many lesser-known Antillean and African writers to reach an international audience.
