Author: Alexis, Jacques Stéphen Nationality: Haitian Sex: m Birth/Death 1922-1961 Biography: Poet, novelist, and political organizer, Jacques Stephen Alexis was an outspoken voice for Haitian liberation. Between 1945 and 1946, Alexis was heavily involved as a contributor and organiser with La Ruche, a militant left-wing political, literary and cultural review that mobilized surrealism toward the antifascist cause. As a student, he participated in strikes against Elie Lescot. He remained a crucial figure of the Haitian communist and antifascist movement and founded the marxist Partie d’Etente Populaire (PEP) in 1959. His political writings include Sur Le Mouvement communiste en Haïti, 1959, Manifeste du Parti d’Entente Populaire et Programme La Nouvelle Indépendance, and Le marxisme – seul guide de la révolution haïtienne. He also wrote four novels: Compère Général Soleil, Les Arbres Musiciens, L’Espace d’un Cillement, and Romancero aux Étoiles. Heavily targeted by the Duvalier regime for his outspoken politics, Alexis was tortured and murdered by the Tonton Macoutes after attempting to clandestinely re-enter the country in 1962.
