Patriotic covers addressed to President Abraham Lincoln
Printed decorative envelopes, circa 1861
Gift of John Hay Whitney, Charles Woodberry McLellan Collection of Lincolniana
These patriotic covers (envelopes) are part of a collection saved by Brown alumnus John Hay (class of 1858) during his time as personal secretary to President Abraham Lincoln. Stamp collections often include historic postal materials other than individual stamps, such as stamped covers or covers issued with decorations. This accumulation is especially rare because of the presidential address.
