The territory that now encompasses Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Jordan was joined under British control in 1923 by a League of Nations mandate and named ?Palestine.? In 1927, Great Britain issued the first definitive stamps of Palestine. These trilingual stamps reflect the United Kingdom?s ?dual obligation? to both the incoming Jewish populations and the existing Muslim and Christian communities. They depict the Dome of the Rock, Rachel’s Tomb, the Tower of David, and a view of a mosque in Tiberias by the Sea of Galilee, all sites of great significance to these three religions. Rather than emphasizing common heritage, these images reinforced land disputes and they remain ubiquitous on stamps in the region today as expressions of solidarity or authority.
