Early Haitian History

Similar to the birth of many other countries, Haiti is the product of revolution.

History of Haiti 1492 to 1805 provided by Kona Shen '10

Experience a timeline detailing Columbus' exploration of the new world to Haiti's revolution. This website was curated by Kona Shen, Brown class of 2010. Below Kona, winner of the 2009 Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Library Research, explains the process of her research.

History of Haiti

“To put together the website, I started by collecting as much detailed information as possible. Then, I edited intensively, trying to be as concise as possible. That was the hardest part, because I had to take an objective stance to see what would be most important as well as most interesting to other readers. I tried to combine basic facts and dates with anecdotes and images that give a sense of what life was like during the Haitian Revolution. With the help of Brown's librarians, I also made it a point to seek out rare and unique primary sources to give the site more depth.”
