Established in 1943 by Henry Bartlett Van Hoesen, Brown University Librarian from 1930 to 1949, in memory of Zechariah Chafee, Class of 1880, for the purchase of books in the field of American history. Increased by a gift from the Mary Dexter Chafee Foundation through Senator John H. Chafee P'75.
