The Bryson Dance Collection
The Bryson Dance Collection, donated in 2010 by Thomas and Antonia Bryson (Class of '72 and '74), consists of over three thousand books, programs, playbills, photographs, ephemera and other documents tracing the international development of theatrical dance, primarily ballet and modern, in the 20th century.
The collection grew out of the complementary interests of Ms. Bryson in the area of dance and of Mr. Bryson in books. The materials cover such pioneering figures as Duncan, Graham, Cunningham, Ailey, Morris, and Jones, amongst others, and companies such as the Ballet Russes, the Royal Ballet, ABT, the Bolshoi and the Kirov ballets. Holdings also include works on social and folk dancing, film and stage performances, exercise books, biographies, dance themed novels and children's books about dance. There are also books on theory, technique, costume and set design, as well as dance programs and playbills. This extensive collection complements other holdings in dance and the performing arts found at the Hay, Rockefeller and Orwig libraries.
