Svanibor Pettan | Applied Ethnomusicology and War at Home: New Perspectives |
Abstract: My presentation is focused on ethnomusicologists’ abilities as musical and cultural conflict mediators in war-torn Yugoslavia in the 1990s. From a distance in time and emotional involvement I critically examine the role of applied ethnomusicology in facing war “at home.”
Kjell Skyllstad | Music in the Multicultural Society: Some Research Perspectives |
Abstract: On the basis of the research project Resonant Society (1989-1992) the author invites a discussion of principles and standards applicable to applied (ethno) musicology. How does the call for engagement, empathy, criticism and follow-up on the part of the researcher hold up against calls for impartiality, objectivity, and value-neutrality? The presentation suggests possible points of reference with the new “critical musicology.”
