African-American Uncataloged |
Music written or sung by or about African Americans dating from the 1830s through the 1980s. The bulk of the collection dates between 1880 and 1950. Popular, minstrel and revue show songs predominate, but there are a few spirituals. Prominent themes reveal pre- and post-Civil War attitudes to slavery; the reconstruction, and Jim Crow periods are also well represented. Many songs are from minstrel collections, especially Christy's Minstrels. Twentieth century music is strongly represented by compositions of Eubie Blake, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and others, and includes some more recent songs popularized by Nat King Cole, Ike & Tina Turner, and Motown. About 1,500 similar titles have been cataloged and digitized, and may be viewed in the African-American Sheet Music Project in the Library's Center for Digital Initiatives. |
