Sheet Music Collection Categories

Cataloged Music

With the aid of a series of grants, four categories of vocal American sheet music were fully cataloged in the early 1980s. Bibliographic records for all titles are available in Josiah, the Library's online catalog. These categories are:

African-Americana, 1820s-1950s.

Approximately 1450 titles. Most titles prior to 1920 have been digitized and are available on the African American Sheet Music web site of the Library's Center for Digital Initiatives.

World War I.
Mostly 1914-1920s Approximately 1325 titles. These titles have also been digitized and are available on the CDI's web site World War I Sheet Music.

World War II, 1940-1945. Approximately 600 titles

Musical Settings of American Poetry, 1830s-1940s; most 19th century. Approximately 1000 titles. A great deal of Longfellow, Poe, George Pope Morris, many other 19th century poets.

Each section also has an uncataloged supplement, consisting of titles identified or added after the conclusion of the cataloging project. These works are filed by title.
