Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection Milestone

The 15,000th digital image from Prints, Drawings, and Watercolors from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection has been published. Image number 15,000, “Dia dos de Mayo de 1810. En Madrid,” is one of eight hand-colored semicircular prints in the collection, and was designed to be mounted as a fan.

Since its inception several years ago, the digital archive has had a tremendous impact on the supply of high resolution images to scholars, researchers, museums, and the media. Enquiries come in daily from around the world requesting images for use in books, magazines, exhibitions, and television. For the Brown/RISD community, the archive has provided access to a wide range of pictures suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses. To illustrate but one example, the collection offers a copy of Jean Baptiste Antoine de Vergers Soldiers in Uniform. This watercolor offers one of the earliest known (circa 1781-1784) depictions of African American soldiers and is one of the collections most requested items.
