The CDS, in collaboration with Professor Michael Satlow, recently relaunched the Inscriptions of Israel/Palestine, an online database of over 1,500 inscriptions from the Persian period through the Islamic conquest (ca. 500 BCE – 640 CE). The inscriptions are written primarily in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin, by Jews, Christians, Greeks, and Romans. They range from imperial declarations on monumental architecture to notices of donations in synagogues to humble names scratched on ossuaries, and include everything in between. The project continues to grow, with a goal of making available all of the 15,000 relevant inscriptions published to date, including substantial contextual information, such as images and geographical information.
The new database includes a faster and more powerful search engine, faceted search and browse features for exploring the inscriptions and their translations, stable links for every inscription, and an updated user interface. This collaboration was the result of the CDS Scholarly Grants program (more information).
