The Liman Collection of Board Games and Puzzles

The Counties of England. A Geographical Game. 2nd Series.

c. 1910, John Jaques & Son, Ltd., London, England.

Despite its educational themes, The Counties of England – which requires players to match cards into sets – more closely resembles modern matching games like Go Fish! or Old Maid rather than quiz games. Its simplicity proved popular: The game was introduced in 1866 and continued to be produced until at least 1940. New editions were made with updated information every few years; it is often possible to date cards by comparing the population numbers of counties with the relevant census information.
