Fiddler took the work of Sholem Aleichem, set amidst the difficult Jewish
experience in
early 20th century Eastern Europe, and transcended the dark elements of the
stories and
their religious specificity. Zero Mostel found another great role in Tevya
the dairyman.
The opening song, Tradition, encapsulates the world of the Eastern European
shtetl,
against which Tevya's daughters will rebel. Its universality - parents and
tradition against
the new generation and a changing world - have mae it an international success.
Notable songs include Sunrise, Sunset, If I Were a Rich Man, and Matchmaker.
