A Funny Thing Happened... is a riotous burlesque further enlivened by
Zero Mostel
as the slave Pseudolus and Jack Gilford as Hysterium. Given his later work,
it is
startling to note that this is a Stephen Sondheim show, the first for which
he contributed
both music and lyrics. He added to the roster of show business tunes this
play's
Comedy Tonight. |

Dolly Levy proved to be a career-enhancing role for many older leading
ladies,
including Ginger Rogers, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Pearl Bailey, and Carol
Channing, who originated the part. It was becoming increasingly rare for
popular
songs to emanate from the Broadway stage, but Hello, Dolly, particularly
as
performed by Louis Armstrong, became a hit. The other lasting song from the
show was Before the Parade Passes By. |

Funny Girl made a star of Barbra Streisand; the song People and her characterization
of
Fanny Brice arei indelibly assocated with Streisand forty years later. Other
notable songs,
enhanced by Streisand's performance, are I'm the Greatest Star, Don't Rain
on My Parade,
and the wonderful Cornet Man. |
