The Brown University Library evaluates and tailors the journal profile based upon a blend of use analysis and researcher input. We attempt to maximize our investment by utilizing journal subscriptions, aggregated content providers, and on-demand document delivery options.
We will soon distribute a new journal survey to departments in order to update our local priority rankings. We combine this information with use data to categorize journals as Essential, Important, Occasional value, and undesignated value. In the event of budget needs, we will target the lowest value titles for possible cancellation. All proposed cancellation lists will be presented to researchers for review before any final action is taken.
In our attempts to reduce costs without removing unique content, we have attempted to reduce all duplication and migrate to online-only journals whenever possible. We understand there are certain reasons why specific journals must remain in print, and we ask for documentation of these special needs during the review process (e.g., less than complete equivalence to paper content, special color image quality concerns, side-by-side image analysis, etc.)
We are also exploring new price models for packages of journals and evaluating the impact of open access publication options.
Please feel free to contact the Library at any time to make suggestions or comments about our journal collection.
