Born-Digital Scholarly Publishing: Resources and Roadmaps breaks new ground by taking a holistic approach to long-form digital publication that also foregrounds the scholars’ experience.

The institute curriculum, which combines the concentrated delivery of foundational knowledge and practical resources with hands-on, individualized developmental editing workshops, consolidates the successful path to university press publication formulated by Brown University Digital Publications.

Taught by internationally recognized digital humanities scholars, librarians, and technologists, authors of born-digital publications, and leading university press directors, acquisitions editors, and production managers—all selected for their expertise and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, this first-of-its-kind national training program provides participants with robust learning and rare networking opportunities.

The summer 2024 institute will take place over three weeks in July with virtual and in-person components.

Weeks 1 and 2 will be held online, with ample breaks and lengthy Q&A periods. Week 3 will be held on the Brown University campus, located in Providence, RI. All on-campus events will be held in the Sidney E. Frank Digital Studio in the Rockefeller Library, which provides a unique and exciting intellectual hub for digitally enhanced scholarship.

Additionally, cohort communication and support continues well beyond the three-week program. Virtual reconvenings after the institute ends will extend individualized problem-solving and project management support, and this website will provide a continuous and active web presence.

  • Participants will reside at the fully accessible Hampton Inn & Suites, the closest hotel to Brown University, located 0.4 miles, or a 10-minute scenic walk, from the Library.
  • A complimentary shuttle service will provide door-to-door pickup/drop-off.

“I appreciate the great care and attention that went into the implementation of this program, and I’m so thankful to Brown for opening up a whole new world of digital publishing possibilities for me. The ideas generated by the institute and the strong sense of community it created will continue to sustain me well beyond those three weeks in the summer of 2022.”
