Dating back to ancient Rome, numismatics ? the study or collection of currency ? has a much longer history than philately ? the study or collection of postage stamps. Brown University has had coin collections since 1872, with the acquisition of William Blanding?s collection of 937 coins and medals. Today the Joukowsky Institute?s collection includes almost 10,000 ancient coins, which researchers and students use to study history and date archaeological sites. Perhaps the stamp collections at Brown might find similar uses in research and teaching.
