Library Mission Statement

The Brown University Library advances instruction, learning, and research in the University by providing critical expertise, curated collections, and responsive technology and spaces in an environment of creativity and inclusivity. Partnering with students, faculty, staff, and members of the global scholarly community, we foster and guide the creation, acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge at Brown and beyond in a spirit of free and open inquiry.

Library Vision Statement

The Library is a dynamic physical, virtual, and intellectual hub for Brown and a partner in furthering the University’s global mission of leadership and academic excellence. Together we preserve the past and innovate for the future.

To fulfill our mission, we pursue these strategic objectives:

  • Advance and protect free inquiry, collaboration, and intellectual creativity as we foster
    diversity and the equitable exchange of ideas
  • Empower students and scholars through instruction and the use of research
    methodologies, services, collections, tools, and facilities
  • Develop, curate, and preserve robust collections strengthened by strategic partnerships
  • Leverage technology to advance the creation, access, analysis, management, and
    preservation of knowledge
  • Design and maintain accessible spaces and resources conducive to changing modes of
    creating, teaching, and learning
  • Recruit, train, and develop a diverse, dedicated, collegial staff who thrive in a continuous
    learning environment
  • Collaborate with other institutions and organizations worldwide to serve the broader
    regional, national, and global communities of learning and scholarship
  • Engage with the community at large through events, exhibits, and open communication
  • Learn from our campus and community members ways in which we can purposefully
