Historic Sound at Brown is a new exhibit in the John Hay Library featuring fifty 78-rpm recordings from the John Hay’s collection of historic sound recordings. Dating between 1903 and about 1950, the recordings span a wide range of musical styles from Minstrel Show to Broadway, Gospel to Novelty Records and from Early Jazz (Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong) to Swing (Artie Shaw) and post-WWII jazz and Military band music. Illustrated sheet music from the John Hay Library’s Sheet Music Collection supplements the recordings.
The exhibit runs until June 30. Ed Hayslip and Ned Quist curate the exhibit with assistance from Rosemary Cullen.
The John Hay Library is located at 20 Prospect St., Providence, RI. Library hours are Monday-Friday, 9-5. For more information contact Edwin_Quist@brown.edu.
