An Inaugural Exhibition of the Caribbean Initiative, Center for Latin American Studies Curated by Patricia Figueroa and Jennifer Lambe Sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies
The exhibit will focus on representations of slave women in the Caribbean basin from the 18th and 19th century, particularly in the accounts of European travellers and residents of the region. Highlighting the variety of stereotypes about slave women that were prominent in European racial ideology, the works will demonstrate the ways in which slavery intertwined with sexual desire, particularly of white men for slave women, and reinforced the subjugation of women in this system.
