BUL New Hire Orientation

Your First Month

Beyond just your immediate coworkers and department, we hope by now that you are starting to get a sense of the entire Library. We hope you will develop professional relationships with colleagues throughout the Brown University Library (BUL) and will create opportunities for you to do so. Be sure you have met your deadline for benefits enrollment!

  • Ask your supervisor about requesting travel/training support and travel reimbursement policies and procedures. Contact Patricia (Pat) Putney, Director of Library Finance and Business Services, at 401-863-2954 for more information. If your position requires that you have a University Pcard, Pat can assist you with obtaining one.
  • Attend the University Human Resources New Hire Orientation. This session includes an overview and history of Brown University. University HR personnel will be on hand to answer questions about benefits and other HR issues.
  • Your employee benefits must be selected within 30 days of your hire date  and this is done via Workday. Please be sure to make your selections, since the default for benefits is set to “waive”.
  • Ask your supervisor if you need business cards from Graphics Services. If you do, you’ll need to order them online and select a cost center for payment. Ask your supervisor or Pat Putney for the appropriate account number.
  • Meet with your supervisor to revisit goals, progress in training, and discuss orientation meetings and tours.
  • If you’re part of the Personnel Program for Librarians, reach out to the current committee chair, Laura Stokes, to meet with members of the PPC and learn about requirements of the program.
  • Continue to introduce yourself to colleagues at the Brown University Library. Get to know other staff, the work they are doing, and how your work may be connected.
  • Library Human Resources will reach out to you about beginning your tour of the Brown University Libraries. The tour will span 12 months and include all six of the Brown University Libraries.
  • Remember that employees receive a probationary review from their date of hire—six months for exempt staff; three months for non-exempt, non-union employees; and three months for non-exempt, union employees. Work with your supervisor to identify key priorities and SMART goals.
