- Be available to greet the employee on his or her first day when they arrive at the Library, or designate someone to do this.
- Introduce the employee to others in the workplace (especially to front desk staff, as the new hire may not have a Brown ID).
- Introduce the employee to their buddy or to onboarding team members.
- Make sure the new employee receives their welcome packet.
- Take the employee on a brief tour of the Library and its spaces.
- Explain how to get additional supplies. Direct the new employee to Virginia (Ginny) Twomey or to a designated person in the department who orders supplies. Ginny maintains a spreadsheet to order supplies.
- Consider taking your new employee for coffee or lunch.
- Confirm that the employee has been provided with information on setting up their voicemail and computer.
- Ask the new employee if they have questions about parking or transportation. Refer the employee to Brown’s transportation website, or suggest that they ask a colleague or Onboarding Committee member for tips.
- Make sure the employee is given department and building-specific safety and emergency information. Check with Bill Wood, Manager, Shelving/Sciences Circulation, if you have questions.
- Your new hire will need to visit the Brown Card Office to obtain a Brown ID at Page-Robinson Hall and complete the I-9. Office hours may vary; please confirm that offices are open before having your new hire visit the office.
- Contact LibTech about additional software or technology needs.
- Verify with Library Facilities that the new hire has card swipe access or keys to needed spaces and buildings.
