BUL New Hire Orientation

Your First Day

Welcome! Today, we’ll be focusing on meeting you and making sure you have what you need to perform your duties. Here’s a list of important tasks you’ll want to accomplish today:

  • You’ll be greeted on your first day either by your supervisor, a colleague, or someone from Library Human Resources (LHR). You’ll head to the LHR office to complete some required paperwork.
  • Go to the Brown Card Office to obtain a Brown ID at Page-Robinson Hall (your Brown ID will be used to enter campus buildings). Bring proper identification so that you may complete your I-9 payroll documentation. Your Brown ID will also provide you with free RIPTA bus transportation and rides on the Brown Shuttle.
  • Meet with—or reach out to—an Onboarding Committee member. They’re here for you if you have any questions.
  • Set up your cubicle or office space with supplies. Ask a colleague to identify the person in your department responsible for ordering supplies. If your department does not have a designated person, contact Virginia Twomey, Executive Assistant to the University Librarian, at virginia_twomey@brown.edu or 401-863-2162. She maintains a spreadsheet for ordering supplies.
  • Make sure you are provided with keys to your work space to secure valuables or files. Contact Bill Wood, Manager, Shelving/Sciences Circulation, at William_Wood@brown.edu or 401-863-6025, for assistance.
  • Work with your supervisor to make sure you have Brown ID card swipe access to immediate areas.
  • Contact Bill Wood, Manager, Shelving/Sciences Circulation, at William_Wood@brown.edu or 401-863-6025,  for assistance with setting up your telephone and voicemail access. Bill can also provide you with a long distance access code.
  • Ask your supervisor or onboarding team members to give you a quick tour of the Library and its spaces. You’ll also be introduced to your fellow colleagues while on your tour.
  • Finding on-campus parking can be challenging, and there may be a wait list. Further explore transportation and parking options by contacting the Transportation Office in the Page-Robinson Hall for more information.
  • Receive your welcome gifts. Inside your BUL tote bag, you’ll find a notebook, travel mug, welcome packet, and maps of Brown and the local area.
  • Review department or building-specific safety and emergency information. Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and where they are in the building. Signs are posted throughout the building with exit routes.
  • Remember to activate your Brown email account if you haven’t already. Go to myaccount.brown.edu to set up your account.
