The appearance of mainland Chinese stamps changed with the regime in 1949. The Nationalist Party of the Republic of China retreated offshore to Taiwan and the Communist Party took control. After the move to Taiwan, stamps of the Republic of China continued to depict prominent figures of the Nationalist Party, such as party founder and first president Sun Yat-sen and military leader Chiang Kai-shek. Meanwhile, stamps of the People?s Republic of China resolutely promoted the new Communist order with portraits of Chairman Mao Zedong , a prolific use of red , and communist symbolism.
