The Ziegfeld Follies

Showman Florenz Ziegfeld, jr., perfected a revue format that called for pretty girls, comedians, musical performances and skits in a fast moving spectacle. His shows were known for lavish productions and costumes and made stars of perfomers such as Fanny Brice, Will Rogers, and Eddie Cantor.

Performed in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1914; the composer was active in the early African-American musical theatre. Ziegfeld acquired the song for the Follies from the composer, after hearing it in in the "Darktown Follies" show My Friend from Kentucky.

The Ziegfeld tradition of pretty girls, outstanding songs,
elaborate productions, and stellar comic performers continued in the 1920s. Ziegfeld heard Mandy when it was performed in Berlin's soldier show Yip Yip Yaphank, andrequisitioned it for his Follies.
