History of the Book in Mexico


 

The SALALM LV pre-Conference workshop will offer an all-day program focusing on the history of the book in Mexico. Divided into four 90-minute sessions, the course will be led by Ken Ward, Maury A. Bromsen Curator of Latin American Books at the John Carter Brown Library.

Overview of the program:

  1. Session 1: "History of the Book in Spain and Latin America"
  2. Session 2: "History of the Book in Mexico"
  3. Session 3: "The Role of Women in Printing and the Book Trades in Mexico"
  4. Session 4: "Collection Development in Colonial Mexico - Monastic Libraries and Private Collectors"

A list of suggested readings for each section will be provided, and each session will feature materials drawn from the John Carter Brown's collection.

John Carter Brown Library
The John Carter Brown Library is an independently administered and funded center for advanced research in history and the humanities, founded in 1846 and located at Brown University since 1901. Housed within the Library's walls is an internationally renowned, constantly growing collection of primary historical sources pertaining to the Americas, both North and South, before ca. 1825. For 150 years the Library has served scholars from all over the United States and abroad. The Library offers fellowships, sponsors lectures and conferences, regularly mounts exhibitions for the public, and publishes catalogues, bibliographies, and other works that interpret its holdings to facilitate and encourage use of the collection.

Workshop limited to 23 participants. All participants must be registered to attend the SALALM LV Congress.
