Introducing a translation of the Japanese contained on the scrolls, the Navel War College writes, “not many Black Ships Scrolls have survived. For this reason, the Naval War College Museum marks itself fortunate to have a collection of well preserved scrolls in its holdings. The collection consists of 13 framed scroll segments…the collection is the property of the Preservation Society of Newport County, which has placed it on long-term loan with the museum.” As a result of seeing the “Request for a Good Relationship” scroll on this website, the Naval War college brought its scrolls to Brown to be digitized and kindly agreed to have them included on this site. These additions to the site show how digital scholarship works. When you make rare materials available on-line, their presence creates new knowledge, whether contributed by students who get to see Japanese scrolls in their classrooms around the world, or by other cultural institutions that want to make their materials available as well.
