We are interested in the different kinds of knowledge presented in visual and written texts. Good historians check more than one source of evidence to understand what happened. This website most uniquely presents the images made by both cultures of their first interaction. But the students who looked at the images found they needed to go to the written record to more fully understand what was happening in the pictures.
Below you find excerpts, and sometimes entire books, recounting the adventures of those who went with Perry, as well as Perry himself. In addition, you’ll find the essays written by the college students as they looked at the images and read the expedition accounts.
