Commander David R. Scott in the DSL on September 26
|
Commander David R. Scott is the first guest in this fall’s Digital Speaker Series. Scott will describe his journey to the Moon in the summer of 1971 and the Apollo 15’s exploration of the Apennine Mountains, the Hadley Rille, and the plains of Mare Imbrium. Scott and fellow astronauts Jim Irwin, and Al Worden also had the opportunity to orbit the Moon, obtaining a host of new observations of the lunar far side. This is a great opportunity to learn firsthand from someone who has experienced life on another planetary body. This event is free and open to public, with a reception to follow. Arrive early. Seating is limited. Apollo 15 Exploration of the Hadley-Apennine Region of the Moon Location: Digital Scholarship Lab Date & Time: September 26th | 5:30 p.m.

First Readings Lecture on September 17th
|
Eyal Press ’92, author of Beautiful Souls, is delivering this year’s First Readings lecture. It will be held in Salomon Center at 4:30 p.m. If you can’t make it to campus, the lecture will be streaming on Brown’s LiveWebcast.
First Readings is a summer reading project for all new Brown students. Now in its seventh year, the program provides first-year and transfer students with a common reading experience that introduces them to the pleasures and rigors of undergraduate academic life. As part of the tradition, the First Readings author comes to campus in the fall to deliver a lecture.
The First Readings book in 2013 was Beautiful Souls. This critically acclaimed book tried to understand why the boldest acts of dissent are often carried out not only by radicals seeking to overthrow the system but also by true believers who cling with unusual fierceness to their convictions.
The author, Eyal Press, is an award-winning journalist as well as a graduate of Brown.

Made Not Born: The Wife and Dimes of Josiah S. Carberry is Available Online
|
For years, the Brown Community has yearned for someone to put that movie about Josiah Carberry online. Even before the internet existed, the followers of Josiah S. Carberry would badger anyone with computer knowledge to invent something that would allow Made Not Born: The Wife and Dimes of Josiah S. Carberry to be more widely available.
As everyone knows, the internet was invented a few years ago. Still, it always felt empty without a Josiah Carberry film presence. But everything as we know it changes today.
The Brown University Library is proud to announce that the entire film about Josiah S. Carberry is now available online.
