BUL New Hire Orientation

Their First Week

  • Clarify the first week’s schedule, and confirm required and recommended training. You can assign helpful training to your new hire in Workday Learning.
  • Review the job description, outline of duties, and expectations.
  • Review hours of work and schedule. Explain policies and procedures for overtime, use of vacation and sick time, holidays, etc.
  • Provide an overview of the Brown University Library – its purpose, organizational structure, goals, and how the new employee contributes to this.
  • If the employee is a member of the bargaining unit, the steward should be reaching out to go over the Collective Bargaining Agreement and other issues.
  • Give the employee an overview of Workday if needed.
  • Explain the purpose of CARBERRY, which is the Brown University Library’s official listserv for communication, Today@Brown, and other important communications.
  • Make sure that the employee has access to relevant Google calendars for reserving rooms. If your new hire will be hosting events, make sure he or she knows about the Library Event form.
  • Assist with planning a 12-month tour of the Brown University Libraries and their departments.
  • Set up a time to have a photo taken for the Staff Photo Directory with Ben Tyler.
