The Unicorn Found

The Unicorn

Rather than the traditional contents of a bestiary, this modern book includes modern American sculptor Alexander Calder’s sketches of animals, paired with quotes from both contemporary and historic sources about each beast. This entry for unicorn illustrated the quote from Jacobean playwright and poet George Chapman’s Bussy D’Ambois, which tells the story of a jeweler who was attacked by a unicorn for attempting to take its valuable horn. Quotes on the opposing page range from Edward Topsell to 20th century mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell.
