The traditional nursery rhyme, “The Lion and the Unicorn” animates the legendary animosity between the two animals. Developing from Great Britain’s heraldic imagery, the story within this rhyme is firmly tied to political relations within the country. Leonard Leslie Brooke (1862-1940), a British children’s book illustrator, created these recognizable images of the dueling pair.
