Reports, January - December 2001
Collection Growth & Use Reports present data on the number of items owned, acquired, cataloged, and circulated over a selected time period, grouped by call number range. Call number ranges are defined by entries in the Statistical Category (SCAT) table, which the library maintains. The SCAT table covers only items cataloged in the Library of Congress classification.
The number of items roughly corresponds to the number of volumes, although not every volume owned is represented by an item record.
The system scans every item in the Josiah database, looking for a call number in the bibliographic record. If the bibliographic record does not contain a call number, the system uses the call number from the item record. If there is no call number in either the bibliographic or item record, it is counted in the "No Call #" line of the resulting report. If the call number in either the bibliographic or item record is not found in the Library of Congress SCAT table, the record will be counted in the "Not in table" line of the report.

Age of the Collections Reports
Age of Collection Reports provide a decade-by-decade count of publication dates from the bibliographic records in Josiah, grouped by Statistical Category (SCAT) range. The SCAT table covers only material cataloged in the Library of Congress classification.
The number of bibliographic records roughly corresponds to the number of titles in the database, although some material is linked to more than one title.
The system scans every title in the Josiah database, looking for a call number in the first attached item record. If none of the items contains a call number, the call number in the bibliographic record will be used. If there is no call number in the bibliographic record, the record is counted in the "No Call #" line of the resulting report. If the call number in either the bibliographic or item record is not found in the SCAT table, the record is counted in the "Not in table" line of the report.
The publication date is taken from the MARC 260 IMPRINT field in the bibliographic record. If a 260 field contains multiple dates, the system uses the first date. Date ranges are grouped into decades with a separate count for each decade of the 20th and 21st centuries. Records with dates earlier than 1900 are reported together.
All of these reports were generated as of January 1, 2001 (give or take two days).
